OS-Frame chassis
Robust oscillating chassis.
The ‘backbone’ of FERRARI specialised tractors is the exclusive OS-Frame integral oscillating chassis.
Made of a single cast-iron casting, the OS-Frame, which houses the tractor’s transmission, has a central joint that allows the front end to oscillate up to 15° longitudinally in relation to the rear carriage.
This technical solution allows the tractor to actively adapt to changes in the terrain, ensuring maximum grip and stability on uneven or rough terrain.
The oscillation of the chassis allows the four wheels of the tractor to maintain constant contact with the ground, unloading all the power of the engine to the ground, maximising traction and safety.
Low centre of gravity and ideal balance.
The OS-Frame has been designed to support the cantilevered engine tractor configuration characterised by a weight distribution of the tractor of 60% on the front axle and 40% on the rear; a balance that becomes optimal (50% on both axles) with the tool mounted on the rear lifter.
The OS-Frame also allows the tractor to maintain a low centre of gravity by increasing lateral stability, thus enabling the tractor to tackle slopes more safely.
Steering and manoeuvrability.
The OS-Frame can be configured with different steering systems depending on the tractor model and its intended use:
- steering system acting on the central articulation (‘AR’ version) that allows the tractor to move with great precision and ease in tight spaces thanks to its small turning radius.
- steering system acting on the front wheels (‘RS’ version) useful in contexts requiring greater lateral stability.
- exclusive ‘Dualsteer®‘ dual steering system for unrivalled manoeuvrability in tight spaces thanks to the patent that links and synchronises the central joint of the chassis to the steering of the front wheels.
The advantages of OS-Frame:
Increased traction:
the four wheels remain in constant contact with the ground.
Stability on sloping terrain:
reduces the risk of tipping.
Operational versatility:
suitable for a wide range of soil conditions and agricultural applications.
Excellent manoeuvrability:
perfect for working in tight spaces and rows.
The characteristic feature of the chassis, with its two oscillating parts that independently follow unevenness of the terrain, is particularly appreciated in isodiametric and differential-wheel SDT tractors designed for specialised operations, such as those in vineyards, orchards, greenhouses or cultivation on sloping terrain where safety, precision and grip are paramount.
OS (One Shaft) -Frame.
Another feature that makes the OS-Frame, with the transmission located inside of it, unique is that the engine and clutch – positioned on opposite sides of the tractor’s central articulation – are connected by a single drive shaft that transmits the motion generated by the engine to both the gearbox and the independent PTO.
This design, with a single universal joint at the point where it crosses the articulation of the undercarriage, guarantees maximum mechanical efficiency and manoeuvrability for the tractor thanks to its more compact dimensions.
Advanced hydraulic clutch.
The engine-transmission coupling is via a high-inertia flywheel that, in tandem with the ‘Long Travel’ torsional damper, reduces engine-generated vibrations to the benefit of performance and increased operator comfort.
The hydraulic multi-disc clutch in oil bath is also fitted inside the transmission, and not behind the powertrain, in order to reduce the engine overhang and consequently the length of the tractor.
Unlike conventional dry clutches, the oil that the plates are immersed in also performs a triple function: dissipating the heat generated by friction, reducing wear on the plate surfaces and ensuring a longer system life.
Finally, the presence of multiple discs increases the contact surface area, improving the efficiency of torque transfer.
Concrete advantages.
A technological choice that translates into several concrete advantages:
- Increased reliability and durability
- Maintenance-free
- Always smooth and jerk-free couplings
- Ability to handle high loads under difficult conditions
- More compact tractor dimensions
- Maximum manoeuvrability
Depending on models and equipment, the FERRARI multi-disc clutch in oil bath can also be controlled mechanically, hydraulically or electro-hydraulically.
