Ameztoi, the winery overlooking the sea.
Situated in Getaria, a Spanish municipality in the province of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country), the ‘Botega Txakoli Ameztoi‘ winery overlooks hillsides made up entirely of its own vineyards, which plunge into the cool, wild Cantabrian Sea.
The entire province of Gipuzkoa, with its 443 hectares of vineyards, is protected by the Getariako Txakolina Denomination of Origin, which, since 1989, has ensured that the origin of the indigenous grapes, their careful processing and quality control come together to offer the consumer the guarantee of Getaria’s famous Txakoli wine.
In these places, wine, and therefore the vineyard, have been protected in some way since ancient times.
In fact, as early as 1397, the General Council of the Brotherhood of Gipuzkoa, held in Getaria, approved the first Ordinances of the province and, in point 18, threatened capital punishment for anyone who destroyed the vineyards.
Ameztoi family, Txakoli producers for five generations.
Since 1820, the Ameztoi family has been producing Txakoli, an aromatic and elegant white wine typical of the Basque Country.
Old barrels, the smell of wood, the sound of bottles and laughter… This is how the old wine cellar of the Ameztoi family used to be, once known by the nickname ‘Kirkilla’ (cricket), a symbol of joy, happiness and pride.
Over time, they have grown and improved their product to its highest expression: an authentic Txakoli to the delight of the most discerning palates.
They always keep the indigenous grape varieties Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza as the basis for processing their wines.

Most of the 51 hectares of vineyards are located on slopes protected from north-westerly winds, with average slopes of 15-20%.
The Ameztoi Txakoli vines are of sufficient height and distance from each other, divided into several plots with slopes and terraces, always seeking the greatest possible exposure to the sun, for optimal ripening of the grapes, and to the sea air of the Cantabrian Sea.
The vines are generally grown on trellises, at a height of 1.80 m so that the bunches are ventilated and away from soil moisture.
Another of the features that make txakoli unique is the pruning system at a sufficient height to keep the grapes insulated from the moisture layer.
